He was 71 years old. His health had been failing since suffering a stroke 11 years ago. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many students. Our prayers are with him. - - - - - - - - - - Nov. 17, 2008 John DiVirgilio and Ned Yonemori have elected to join the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) as a level II group. It is felt that the AAU, with its wide contact with other Chinese martial arts clubs/schools, established system of medals, national news coverage, and tournment experience offers the benefit for our Wing Chun family. It is hoped that other Wing Chun schools and clubs will alsojoin the AAU. Costs for the yearly AAU membership varies with the approximate yearly cost running $80 for the school/club registration, approx. $18 for youth athletes, $25 for adults athletes, and about $20 more for coaches. If you cannot be bothered, you can pay the AAU membership under the windard school a couple of days before the competition. Check out the AAU URL listed below for latest information: http://aausports.org/sprt_ChineseMartialArts.asp?a=sprt_ChineseMartialArts_home.htm The windward group will begin planning a series of small (twice a year) competition/workshop events tentatively slated for the last week of this coming March and the first week of next October 2009. Possible projected site will be at the Kokokahi YWCA in Kaneohe. As the small bi-yearly competition grows so will the news spread. Hopefully, the AAU will begin posting competition news and results as they occur in our state. Stay tuned for more information later. - - - - - - - - 11/17/2008 - - - - - - - - - ***** RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT ***** Chief Instructor John F. DiVirgilio has announced his retirement as the President of the Hawaii Wing Chun Kung-Fu Association effective at the end of the year. With 35 years of association involvement and approaching his 54th birthday, he feels it is time to get new blood into the administrative/leadership role. Upon his retirement, he will remain as one of the association's council of elders and act as a friendly liaison, ballot counter, and mediator for the association. As his last function as the association president, president DiVirgilio will now start collecting nominations (names) and personal "first round" votes from all association members for the new leadership position. The top three names will be posted every two weeks throughout November and most of December. During the last week in December, one final round of voting for the final two nominees will decide the next president. Should the winner decline or resign from office, the position of association president will be offered to the second most favored nominee. The president's term should not last more than two years with a limit of two consecutive terms. [[[ Nomininees please note that the office of association president is not for the thin skinned, short tempered, or weak of heart. Along with the good aspects of the office, there will be a lot of time consuming misunderstandings, ego clashes, fence mending, and dirty laundry to straighten out.]]] The next president will have clear a number of unresolved issues such as assocition dues, yearbook publishing, instructor's certification critria, assembling a mediation board, and constructing a living constitution for the association.
